Activities Plan

The rock paintings of Kondoa are a collection of rock paintings in the Kondoa district of Tanzania. They are found on a series of hills that form the western slopes of the African Rift Valley and descend to the Maasai steppe. There are several overhanging slabs of sedimentary rocks, created by natural demolition, on which the drawings of hunters, gatherers, farmers and also animals of that time are found. These sequences, of great artistic value, show how the socio-economic base of the area has changed over the centuries, and some of the rock overhangs still serve as traditional places for rituals for the people who live nearby. Many sites are associated with the rituals of the Hadza and Sandawe and are still practiced today. Known today are several hundred caves and rock overhangs where the drawings can be found. The first investigations go back to Louis Leakey in the 1930s. It is assumed that the paintings are considerably older than 1500 years, but there is no reliable information about the age of the youngest paintings. In 2006 the rock paintings were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Coming from Arusha, this activity is recommended for 2 days, and 1 night. You leave Arusha in the afternoon and spend the night near Tarangire or Babati area. The next day you depart to the Rock-Art site in Kolo village, a 1.5 hrs drive. Walk and explore the rock paintings and after lunch, you begin your journey back to Arusha. In case you visit Tarangire or Lake Manyara, you just need to plan for an extra day and night.
